He lived it, fought it, and overcame it. Born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, in 1950, Pastor Esteban Morales began his professional life with a degree in Medical Technology. He possessed a clinical understanding of the human body, yet even that knowledge could not protect him when he fell into the devastating, painful grip of severe drug addiction. He knew the darkness, the isolation, and the hopelessness firsthand.
But his story did not end in the shadows.
The Turning Point
At the age of twenty-five, everything changed. During a powerful outreach campaign led by international evangelist Nicky Cruz—set to the vibrant music of Bobby Cruz and Richie Ray—Esteban encountered the transformative love of Jesus Christ. Under the direct mentorship and discipline of Pastor Bobby Cruz, Esteban’s life was radically restored. Within just one year of his conversion, he was called into ministry, turning his greatest pain into his ultimate purpose.
A Heart for the Forgotten
Driven by a relentless calling, Pastor Morales began taking his message of hope to the hardest places: the yards of Puerto Rico’s penal institutions. Recognizing that recovery requires a safe haven, he founded "Llave a la Libertad" center in Carolina, PR, in 1985. For a decade, he poured his life into providing transitional homes for formerly incarcerated individuals, even expanding his mission to the island of Curaçao.
The Birth of House of Freedom
On May 1, 1991, having relocated to Kissimmee, Florida, Pastor Esteban and his beloved wife, Olga, embarked on what would become their greatest lifelong venture: House of Freedom.
What began as a passionate mission to rehabilitate those battling substance abuse grew into a beacon of world-class, faith-integrated treatment. For decades, Esteban and Olga worked tirelessly on the front lines of the addiction crisis. The true fruit of their labor isn’t found in a building, but in the thousands of living, breathing individuals who have had their families, health, and spirits restored because of their dedicated service.
The Dream Lives On
Pastor Morales’ earthly journey ended in 2005, but the heartbeat of House of Freedom remains stronger than ever. As his dear friend, Evangelist Nicky Cruz, so beautifully stated at his farewell:
"The dreamer dies, but not the dream, because the dream belongs to God."
Today, every advanced therapy, every compassionate counseling session, and every life saved at House of Freedom is a continuation of Pastor Esteban Morales’ extraordinary dream.
